Do Financial Incentives Increase HIV Care Engagement and Retention?
Successful HIV care involves getting tested, initiating care, remaining in care, and taking ARVs as needed. Movement through the HIV care cascade may be helped by the use of financial incentives that reward patients for completing steps in the cascade. Researchers reviewed the literature for use of financial incentives in HIV care and found that they do show promise, especially in the areas of increasing testing rates and ARV adherence. Cost-effectiveness, durability, and ease of implementation are some of the factors that need to be considered when planning for financial incentives in HIV care.
