Efficacy of 4 Week Program of Neonatal ARVs

Irish researchers showed that a four-week course of infant ARVs was as effective in preventing vertical transmission of HIV as a six-week course. Transmission rate amongst subjects (N=916) was 1.09%. Additionally, if the mother received at least four-weeks of ARVs as well, transmission rate dropped to 0.4% (N=910). This research provides evidence that a more cost-effective, potentially less toxic four-week course of ARV therapy is a reasonable alternative to the standard of care.
