ARVs and Impact on HIV-Exposed Uninfected Children

Recommendations for ARV use during pregnancy and breastfeeding in low resource settings has created a large population of HIV-exposed and ARV -exposed children. While the positive impact of prevention of perinatal HIV through use of ARVs is obvious, and short-term impacts such as low birthweight and premature delivery have been reported, the long term health effects on these children are unknown. Recommendations are made to pursue long-term cohort studies of these children to determine the outcomes of such exposure.
