Use of Neonatal AZT for Prevention of Perinatal HIV Transmission

Researchers looked at mother infant pairs to determine the optimal length of neonatal AZT treatment for HIV-exposed infants.  In this study researchers put low risk infants on an abbreviated 2 week AZT regimen.  In this small cohort, a short neonatal course of medications was as effective as the traditional German course in preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission.
