Policy Statement from AAP on Infant Feeding and HIV Transmission in the U.S.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, Committee on Pediatric AIDS, released a policy statement on January 28, 2013, outlining recommendations for feeding HIV-exposed infants in the United States. The statement includes a summary of WHO feeding guidelines for resource-limited settings which recommend breastfeeding and a rationale for avoidance of breastfeeding in the United States . The AAP statement recommends complete avoidance of breastfeeding, regardless of maternal viral load and antiretroviral therapy, as the safest infant feeding option for HIV-infected mothers in the United States, given the availability of clean water and affordable replacement feeding.
