HIV Rates Among US Black Women Higher Than Previously Reported

A study recently presented at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) demonstrated much higher rates of HIV infection in US black women than originally thought. The study of geographic "hot spots" of HIV infection found an incidence rate (0.24%) that was 5 times higher than the CDC 2009 annual HIV incidence estimate for US black women (0.05%) and comparable to estimated HIV adult incidence rates in parts of sub-Saharan Africa (Congo 0.28% and Kenya 0.53%).
