Viral Loads Postpartum in HIV-Infected Women

The AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) A5150 team saw significant increases in viral loads in women by 24-weeks postpartum. These women were on HAART for perinatal prevention during their pregnancy. Amongst those who changed or discontinued their HAART postpartum, 52.6% saw a more than 5-fold increase in viral load from 34-36 weeks gestation to 24 weeks postpartum. In those that maintained a stable medication regimine, only 18.2% saw viral load rebound.
