Serodiscordance and Disclosure in Southwestern US
The prevalence of HIV-positive pregnant women in serodiscordant relationships has not been quantified to this point. Researchers looked at the patient population of a women's HIV program in Texas to determine not only rates of this type of relationship but also whether or not these women were disclosing to their HIV-negative partners. Data showed that serodiscordant relationships were common in this population and that over 90% of women had disclosed their HIV status to their partner prior to conception. Much lower rates of disclosure were seen in couples where the partner's HIV status was unknown (only 68% of women disclosing). Further work around disclosure, especially in serodiscordant relationships, is needed.
