PrEP and Conception

The use of once daily oral tenofovir (TDF) as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has been shown to be effective in prevention of transmission of HIV between serodiscordant partners. However, HIV-negative women who use PrEP to conceive with an HIV-positive partner need to weigh the benefits of infection prevention against the lesser known effects of TDF during pregnancy. Authors suggest that the use of PrEP should be a viable part of the conception discussion between a provider and patient.
