Premastication and Risk for HIV Transmission

The CDC looked at premastication (pre-chewing) food for infants by caregivers across nine HIV-clinic sites to determine the prevalence of this practice. Rates were as high as 31% of caregivers who stated they had premasticated food for HIV-exposed children ages 1-6. Rates of premastication were higher among caregivers that were younger and African American. As a result, the CDC is encouraging providers to discuss the risk of HIV transmission through premastication with clients and advise those infected with HIV against the practice.
