Long Term Infant Outcomes Post-Exposure to ART in Utero

Researchers from the DART trial in Uganda and Zimbabwe studied long term effects of in utero exposure to ART in infants born to HIV-positive mothers. Overall infant mortality rate of 5% was similar to that in the general population. In addition, there were not increases in health abnomalities related to the mother's use of tenofovir, including renal, congenital or growth abnormalities. The smaller scale of this study requires confirmation to determine the overall safety of tenofovir during pregnancy.
