HIV Remission for Perinatally Infected Patient

A presentation at this year's International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention shared data on a patient who was diagnosed HIV-positive at 4 weeks of age, started on ART at 3 months of age (with a high viral load), and achieved an undetectable viral load after one month of treatment.  With a few minor exceptions this child maintained an undetectable viral load and treatment was discontinued by the family at just over 5 1/2 years of age. The child continued to have a viral load less than 50 when reevaluated 10 and 11 years later. Researchers are optimistic that this data indicates that long term HIV-1 remission is possible in perinatally infected early-treated children.
