HAART During Pregnancy for Undetectable Viral Load

Researchers in the United Kingdom found that HAART was most effective in achieving undetectable HIV viral loads at delivery when initiated by 20.4 weeks gestation in those women with initial viral loads >10,000 copies/ml and as late as 26.3 weeks gestation in women with initial viral loads < 10,000 copies/ml. Overall, the chance of achieving an undetectable VL was low in those with initial VL > 100,000 copies/ml and was dependent on the amount of time on HAART. Current guidelines need to be evaluated in light of this information.
