Ultrasound exam The risk of mother to child transmission of HIV can be reduced to less than 2% with proper care and treatment during pregnancy, labor and the newborn period.

The medical care of HIV positive pregnant women is complex and unique. The United States Department of Health and Human Services publishes treatment guidelines for perinatal HIV prevention that are continually reviewed and updated by HIV experts. They can be found at AIDSinfo.
