Pediatric Health Care Providers
Pediatric health care providers are an important part of perinatal HIV prevention. They may provide medical care to HIV-exposed newborns, conduct rapid tests on infants in the newborn nursery, consult on AZT dosing requirements for exposed babies, or treat infected children.
As of June 23, 2006, Illinois law mandates rapid testing of all babies born to mothers with unknown HIV status and the reporting of positive rapid tests to the 24/7 Illinois Perinatal HIV Hotline.
