Obstetric Health Care Providers

Obstetric health care providers play an important role in the prevention of perinatal transmission of HIV. They may provide prenatal care to HIV-infected women, conduct rapid HIV testing on labor and delivery units, ensure safe labor and deliveries, and plan for appropriate follow-up care for mothers and exposed newborns.

Labor and delivery staff are required by Illinois law to counsel and recommend rapid HIV tests to women with unknown HIV status and to report positive rapid tests to the 24/7 Illinois Perinatal HIV Hotline.
