Sexual Practices Among Perinatally-Infected, HIV-Positive Youth

The Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study found that youth perinatally-infected with HIV reported high rates of unprotected sex (62% of sexually active youth ages 10-18). Non-adherence to ARVs was found to be associated with sexual activity. These youth often have drug resistance strains of HIV and their lack of use of protection during sexual activity places their partners at high risk of infection with a drug-resistant virus. The authors concluded that specific, effective interventions need to be developed to work with these use to encourage condom use and ARV adherence.
