Risk of Perinatal HIV Transmission Increased with Presence of Co-Infections

Co-infections, such as herpes or Hepatitis B, can increase the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV by activating agents that enhance HIV replication.  Careful screening and treatment of these co-infections can contribute to a decrease in perinatal HIV worldwide.
