Prevention of Perinatal HIV with HAART in Low Resource Settings

Researchers in Nigeria found that women treated with just nevirapine at labor ('untreated group") had worse pregnancy outcomes than those treated with HAART during the pregnancy, including higher incidence of IUGR, admission to neonatal intensive care unit, and lowere Apgar scores. This study also found that women with low levels of education had more difficulites in using HAART and other prevention services than those with more education. These findings are useful for development of prevention programs for low resource settings.
