Maternal ART Reduces Transmission of HIV Through Breast Feeding

A study recently presented at the 2009 International AIDS Society conference found that in a breast feeding population of women in Botswana, the rate of mother-to-child transmission was 1% among women who received ART through six months postpartum. The study authors conclude that ART is successful in preventing HIV transmission both in utero and during the first six months of breastfeeding.
