Lopinavir/Ritonavir and Dosing During Pregnancy

Although recommended as the preferred protease inhibitor for antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy, optimal dosing for Lopinavir/Ritonavir has not been provided in the guidelines. This study looked at providing an increased dose (3 tablets daily versus two) during the third trimester to provide the best protection against vertical transmission. At the increased dose, absorption was similar to that of nonpregnant patients receiving the standard dosing. Lower concentrations during pregnancy may be due to absorption differences caused by the pregnancy.
