HIV-Positive Women and Pregnancy Planning

Women participating in the HOPES study were asked about their pregnancy desires using a scale comparing unplanned/ambivalent pregnancy versus planned pregnancy.  In this multisite cohort, 23% of women had an unplanned pregnancy, 58% were ambivalent about their pregnancy, and 19% had a planned pregnancy.  Researchers found that those women who were engaged in medical care and had talked with their provider were less likely to have an unplanned pregnancy.  Integrating reproductive counseling into medical care for HIV-positive women may decrease the number of unplanned pregnancies amongst this group.
