HIV Medications and Hormonal Contraceptives

The Partners in Prevention HSVHIV Transmission Study and Partners in PrEP Study researchers looked at the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives in preventing pregnancy for those women on antiretroviral therapy. They found that ART did not significantly diminish the effect of hormonal contraceptives and that implants were more effective at pregnancy prevention than oral contraceptives for those women on ART. There was a slight diminished effect for all methods when ART included efavirenz, however it was not statistically significant.
