Extended Drug Regimen Cuts HIV Risk for Breastfeeding Infants

A National Institutes of Health (NIH) study presented at the 18th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in Boston found that breastfeeding infants receiving daily nevirapine for six months had lower rates of HIV transmission by age 6 months than those receiving nevirapine daily for six weeks. The study investigators will conduct their final analysis after all infants have completed 18 months of follow-up this summer.
