Exposure to Kaletra and Adrenal Problems Among Infants

Researchers compared HIV-exposed infants treated postnatally with lopinavir-ritonavir (Kaletra) with those treated with zidovudine (AZT). Those exposed to Kaletra had elevated 17OHP levels. There was also an increase in values for those exposed in utero versus not exposed in utero. Additionally, three preterm infants had life threatening symptoms from Kaletra exposure. Overall, treatment with Kaletra was associated with adrenal dysfunction.
