Effective Microbicide to Prevent HIV Transmission

The CAPRISA 004 trial in South Africa found that the use of tenofovir gel, a microbicide, by women prior to and after sex led to a decrease in HIV transmission. Women were followed for 30 months. Those with a high adherence rate to gel usage showed a 54% reduction in HIV infection while intermediate usage showed a 38% reduction and low usage showed a 28% reduction for an overall rate of reduction of HIV transmission of 39%. This data was initially presented at the 2010 International AIDS Conference and also showed promising results in the reduction of herpes simplex virus (HSV)-2 transmission.
