Contraceptive Use for HIV-Positive Women

A longitudinal study examined contraceptive use of both HIV-positive and HIV-negative women over time (1998-2010). Researchers found that there was little change in the usage rates of condoms, the dominant form of contraception for HIV-positive women. HIV-negative women showed an increase in other forms of contraception, including IUDs and implants which was not seen in HIV-positive women. Providers need to encourage the use of condoms in conjunction with other forms of contraception for HIV-negative women in order to prevent risk of HIV infection and unintended pregnancies.
