AZT and Heart Defects in Children

Researchers from the French Perinatal Cohort study examined exposure to zidovudine (AZT) in utero and occurrence of congenital heart defects in those children who are HIV-negative.  Among the study population, exposure to AZT during the first trimester of pregnancy was significantly associated with congenital heart disease, specifically ventricular septal defects.  Researchers urge further review of the long term implications of AZT exposure on cardiac function in these children.
