WHO Guidelines on PrEP and Initiation of ARVs for HIV

The World Health Organization released its Guideline on When to Start Antiretroviral Therapy and on Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis for HIV as a early release in preparation for updating its guidelines on the use of antiretroviral therapy for treating and preventing HIV which is due in 2016. Changes to previous guidelines include the new recommendation to start ARVs for everyone with HIV no matter their CD4 count as well as the recommendation for the use of daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as a prevention choice for people at substantial risk of HIV infection as part of combination prevention approaches. The recommendations in this guideline will form part of the revised consolidated guidelines on the use of ARV drugs for treating and preventing HIV infection to be published by WHO in 2016.
