Updated Pediatric Guidelines
The Panel on Antiretroviral Therapy and Medical Management of HIV-Infected Children (the Panel) recently updated the November 1, 2012, Guidelines for the Use of Antiretroviral Agents in Pediatric HIV Infection. Key changes include:
- Considerations for HIV infection diagnosis;
- "Clinical and Laboratory Monitoring of Pediatric HIV Infection" section modifications;
- Guidance on when to start antiretroviral therapy in light of the "functional cure" of the Mississippi baby;
- Additions and reorganizations in the "What Drugs to Start: Initial Combination Therapy for Antiretroviral Treatment-Naive Children" section;
- Additional items added to the "What Not to Start: Regimens Not Recommended for Initial Therapy of Antiretroviral-Naive Children" section;
- Restructuring of the “Management of Treatment-Experienced Infants, Children, and Adolescents Receiving Antiretroviral Therapy” section and additional recommendations added;
- Addition of graded strength recommendations on evaluating plasma concentrations for ARV treatment-naive and treatment-experienced children;
- Addition of a table summarizing recommendations for use of available resistance testing; and
- Updates to drug descriptions with relevant pediatric information.
