Updated Adult and Adolescent Treatment Guidelines Available

The HHS Panel on Antiretroviral Guidelines for Adults and Adolescents released updated Guidelines for the Use of Antiretroviral Agents in HIV-1 Infected Adults and Adolescents. Key additions and revisions to the guidelines include:

  • Addition of a new section on Cost Considerations and Antiretroviral Therapy
  • Change in recommendations on frequency of CD4 count monitoring (CD4 count between 300 and 500 cells/mm3: CD4 count monitoring every 12 months; CD4 count >500 cells/mm3: CD4 count monitoring is optional)
  • Change in classification of recommendations for initial treatment from "preferred regimens" to "recommended regimens"
  • Emphasis on key principles to follow when switching ARV drugs in the setting of viral supression
  • Addition of a new table that provides recommendations on ARV drug options when switching ARV drugs because of adverse effects
  • Minor revisions were made to the following sections: Initiating Antiretroviral Therapy in Treatment-Naive Patients; Virologic Failure and Suboptimal Immunologic Response; Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy; HIV-Infected Adolescents and Young Adults; Drug Interactions (and Tables 17-19c); Drug Characteristics Tables (Appendix B)
